In the previous articles (links provided at the bottom) we learned a little about what coaching is and why some people stagnate while others succeed in life. We also learned that no matter what your present situation is, it is still possible to build a bright future. In this article, you will take the first step towards greater success and fulfillment in your life.
This first step consists of doing a free online assessment called ’’Chart Your Life’’. This will identify your levels of satisfaction in the most important areas of your life, such as your relationships (significant other/childrens/siblings), work, leisure, finances etc…
Doing this assessment is like taking a snapshot of where you are in your life right now. The results will show you where you are for every area of your life in the pyramid presented below.
Before you go through the assessment, let me explain what it will provide you.
The Image
This is what I call the pyramid of success*. Let’s look at it and see what we can learn from this one image.
Although this picture already states a lot, here are some additional explanations.
As you can see, there are 5 levels in the pyramid, ranging from surviving at the bottom to succeeding at the top. In this short assessment (which takes less than 5 minutes) you will be asked to think about every area of your life in terms of both short-term gratification or happiness and long-term benefit or meaning.
In other words, SUCCEEDING in one area of your life simply means that you are getting both short-term gratification or happiness and long-term benefit or meaning from it.
The Levels of Success
Let’s see a few examples describing each level:
For instance, physical activity such as biking brings short-term gratification or happiness and long-term meaning because it helps your health in both the short and long term. Therefore, it would be classified as SUCCEEDING.
If you think your job is okay but not great, and that you will grow in it but it will not have a significant long-term impact, then it would be classified as SUSTAINING.
Watching television might be interesting in the short-term, but it’s not particularly meaningful in the long term (unless you are watching something that is life-changing). Therefore it would be classified as STIMULATING & SATISFYING.
During your school years, there are many mandatory ’’useless’’ topics we have to study. We don’t like it but we know that in the long term they will contribute to get the diploma or degree. Therefore it would be classified as SACRIFICING.
Working in a job that you don’t like (like 70% of the work population, according to recent surveys) but that helps you pay the bills would be classified as SURVIVING, since it only provides low amounts of short-term satisfaction or happiness and low amounts of long-term benefit or meaning.
Therefore, this assessment will let you know at what level of the pyramid you are for each area of your life. This first step will help you identify where you can focus your efforts to improve your life.
Now it’s time for your assessment. Take the time to read the report carefully because it will provide a clear picture of where you are in your life.
